High School - Hallway

Vincent: Hey, I was just thinking about you. So, are, are we still going out?

Ruthie: That depends. I can't answer a question I haven't been officially asked. Are you asking me out?

Vincent: Yeah... oh, okay... uh... Ruthie Camden, would you please do me the honor of going out on a date with me?

Ruthie: Yes, of course I'll go out with you.

Vincent: The only problem is I can't drive us. My parents don't let me drive at night; it makes them too nervous. I feel really stupid asking you out on a date when I can't even pick you up.

Ruthie: Well, that's okay; I live in a house full of licensed drivers. I'll get someone to drive us.

Vincent: As long as it's not your dad, I'm, I'm cool with it.

Ruthie: I won't ask him to drive us. That would be way too...

Vincent: Embarrassing?

Ruthie: There has to be a stronger word, but embarrassing will do for now.

Vincent: (laughs)

Vincent: Well, ah, I guess I'll talk to you later so we can plan our date.

Ruthie: Yeah, so we can plan our date.

Camden's House - Kitchen

Annie: Well, okay, go ahead. We've been waiting to have this conversation for two weeks.

Eric: Waiting? More like dreading.

Ruthie: I just need to ask you a few questions.

Eric: Go ahead.

Ruthie: These past two week, have I been helping out with the baby?

Annie: Yes, you've been very helpful with the baby.

Ruthie: And have you had a chance to look at my report card?

Eric: We have. Your report card is excellent.

Ruthie: And you like Vincent's parents?

Eric: When I met with them, I thought they were very nice and very happy they decided to come to church.

Annie: Me, too.

Ruthie: So... since I'm helping out around the house and doing so well in school, don't you think I deserved to go out on a date with Vincent, a nice guy whose family you've met and like?

Eric: You didn't ask us if we like Vincent.

Ruthie: Do you like Vincent?

Eric: Yes...

Annie: (nods)

Annie: Yes...

Ruthie: Are those "yes" tears or "no" tears?

Eric: Those are "yes" tears. I think you better get out of here before they become "yes" sobs. Okay, you can go out with Vincent.

Ruthie: Thanks...

Annie: Baby... oh...

Eric: Hmmm... do we have to let her go?

Annie: She's not leaving home, she's just dating. She's old enough to start dating. Mary and Lucy were younger when they started dating.

Eric: How can this not bother you? It's gonna be her first real date.

Annie: I'm not saying it doesn't bother me, I, I, I'm just saying it's time for us to acknowledge that Ruthie is not the baby of the family anymore; she's a teenager who wants to date. What are you thinkin'?

Eric: I thinking we shouldn't have given her two weeks to come up with such a strong case... I think it was a mistake. I wish'd found a way to buy some more time.

Annie: Buy some time? You can't buy time, Eric, it's not possible. I wish it were, but it's not.

Matt: I know that look. Yes, I'm here in Glenoak, when I should be in New York. But before you panic, things with Sarah and medical school are great. That's actually why I'm here. Not because of Sarah, because medical school. I'm studying up on TENS... Transcutaneous Electronic Nerve Stimulation... It's a specialized birthing technique used to relieve pain, and the Dean suggested I come to Glenoak to talk to a colleague who uses it. This way I can watch him work patients and see if it's something I want to pursue.

Eric: No, the look wasn't about you, it was about Ruthie.

Matt: What about Ruthie?

Eric: Your Dean's colleague wouldn't happen to know how to stop a teenage girl from going out on her first date. Ruthie's goin' out on her first date.

Matt: Good thing I'm here, in case your heart gives out.

Eric: Yeah, keep a close watch.

Matt: Who's Ruthie dating?

Eric: His name is Vincent.

Matt: Nice guy?

Eric: Very nice.

Matt: Good family?

Eric: Yes...

Matt: And she's been helping around the house and doing good in school?

Eric: Yeah, yeah, she has her bases covered.

Matt: So there's no way to stop her.

Eric: 'Fraid not.

Matt: (sighs)

Camden's House - Kevin and Lucy's Room

Ruthie: Just thought you'd like to know, I have a date... with Vincent.

Kevin: I should have a talk with her.

Lucy: What kind of talk?

Kevin: You know what kind of talk.

Lucy: No...

Kevin: The talk.

Lucy: (laughs)

Lucy: About sex?

Kevin: Yes, about sex.

Lucy: And why would you be the one to have that talk with my sister?

Kevin: I got a girl pregnant in high school.

Lucy: Except she wasn't pregnant.

Kevin: That's hardly the point.

Lucy: Well, still, that doesn't qualify you to talk to Ruthie about sex. Besides, mom and dad have talked to Ruthie about sex for years.

Kevin: This is different, now there's an actual opportunity to have sex. And, besides for you, I don't think your parents did too well on the talk... Simon, for example.

Lucy: I think the cop in you and the brother-in-law in you are overreacting.

Kevin: Then you should talk with her.

Lucy: No one needs to talk to Ruthie.

Kevin: One of us should talk to her, and whoever does should hold the baby, that will really get the point across. She's never going to date... ever.

Camden's House - Garage Apartment

Mac: So where else can we go tomorrow night, besides the Promenade and the pool hall, to pick up woman?

Martin: I'm busy tomorrow night.

Mac: Busy with what?

Martin: I saw Ruthie as we were leaving school; she has a date tomorrow night.

Mac: So, what does that have to do with us?

Martin: It doesn't have anything to do with us, but Ruthie might want me to drive her and Vincent, since I kind of got them together.

Mac: She asked you to ask him to ask her out.

Martin: And now that he has, I'm thinking I should drive 'em.

Mac: Then I'll come too. We'll chaperone them, be the sensitive, older-brother types. Girls would probably love that.

Martin: I don't think it's a good idea.

Mac: Why not? We're helping Ruthie, and with the possibility of meeting women, it's perfect.

Martin: I, I don't think Ruthie would be comfortable with that.

Mac: Why not? She likes me.

Martin: Exactly...

Mac: She likes me, like me... like she has a crush on me.

Martin: Come on, it was pretty obvious. Don't you remember when we went out for pizza and our dates came, and Ruthie left in tears?

Mac: Ooooh, so that's what that was about?

Martin: Yeah...

Mac: She still have a crush on me?

Martin: No, she likes Vincent.

Mac: Ah, of course, I'm too old for her.

Martin: You're too old, too experienced, too everything, don't even think about it.

Camden's House - Attic Room

Matt: So, we're out of Kleenex, and dad's at an official loss for words. That can only mean one thing... you have a date.

Ruthie: Yeah...

Matt: Wow, I'd be happy to drive you.

Ruthie: Thanks...

Martin: Actually, I'd be happy to drive you.

Matt: Well, that's nice of you, but I'm, her older brother, and I'm drivin' her.

Eric: No, I thought I would be driving you. Didn't I mention that was one of the ground rules?

Ruthie: Vincent and I talked about it, and we don't want you to drive us.

Eric: Why?

Martin: Awkward...

Matt: More like mortifying.

Ruthie: And you wouldn't just be drivin' us, you'd be spyin' on us.

Eric: I prefer the term chaperoning.

Martin: There's an easy solution here. I fixed Ruthie and Vincent up, I'll drive them.

Ruthie: I don't know if Vincent's parents would like that, you kind of have a bad reputation right now.

Martin: I didn't so anything with Zoe.

Ruthie: Yeah, but once the suggestion's out there...

Matt: That settles it, I'll drive you.

Ruthie: I think that's probably best.

Camden's House - Nursery

Annie: Oh, it seems like just yesterday when Ruthie was in diapers.

Lucy: It seems that way to me, too.

Annie: Oh, it's a scary when daughters start dating.

Lucy: Yeah, but it turned out well for me.

Annie: It did. But, you are just out of college, married, and have a baby.

Lucy: What's wrong with that?

Annie: Nothing...

Lucy: You think I should have waited.

Annie: Ah, no... I just always pictured my daughters getting out and spending some time being single, working, living on their own. Well, each just that each girl is different; I just think Ruthie will probably be the who'll wanna wait awhile before she gets married.

Lucy: Because she's more secure, confident, independent.

Annie: No, your choices are not wrong; they're the right choices for you. I just see Ruthie choosing another way.

Lucy: Some people spend their entire lives searching for the right person to spend the rest of their life with, to start a family with... I consider myself lucky to have found that person so soon, and was able to start a family with him now. And, and don't forget that you also married young, and had a family right away.

Annie: I realize that.

Lucy: Do you have any regrets?

Annie: Of course not.

Lucy: Are you sure? Because you seem pretty hot on the idea of Ruthie doing things differently.

Annie: I'm very sure I have no regrets.

Lucy: It was just a question.

Annie: Really, I wasn't commenting on your choices.

Camden's House - Sam and David's Room

Sam: I'm happy for Ruthie.

David: Yeah, I bet first dates are fun.

Sam: Pretty soon she'll be married.

David: And she'll have a baby, too.

Sam: That means we will get to live in the attic.

David: Maybe we can make the attic our playroom.

Sam: I'll miss Ruthie when she gets married and moves out.

David: But a new playroom sounds good.

Camden's House - Attic Room / Vincent's House

Ruthie on Phone: Hello... oh, hey Vincent, good news... my dad won't driving us on our date.

Ruthie on Phone: My brother Matt will.

Vincent on Phone: Matt's not like your dad, is he?

Ruthie on Phone: No, he's been out of the house the longest and is probably the least crazy out of everyone here. He's gonna be a doctor.

Vincent on Phone: Oh good... well, that sounds normal.

Vincent on Phone: So listen, I was thinking we'd see a movie and then go to Pete's...

Vincent on Phone: ...maybe goin' to the Promenade will make us feel more like we're out by ourselves, you know?

Ruthie on Phone: Okay...

Ruthie on Phone: ...on one condition.

Vincent on Phone: What's that?

Ruthie on Phone: You have to let me pay for the pizza if you pay for the movie.

Vincent on Phone: But wouldn't that make it more like we're just hanging out?

Ruthie on Phone: No, it would be fair; I'd be more comfortable if you let me pay for something.

Vincent on Phone: All right, but I was saving my allowance for this.

Ruthie on Phone: So did I.

Vincent on Phone: All right...

Ruthie on Phone: Don't get me wrong, I still want it to be a real date.

Vincent on Phone: Yeah, I do, too.

Ruthie on Phone: But the whole weird dating ritual just makes me nervous, people here are making such a big deal out of this.

Vincent on Phone: Yeah, tell me about it. My parents are already planning our second date.

Ruthie on Phone: Are you thinking about our second date?

Vincent on Phone: I was actually wondering if I could kiss you again.

Ruthie on Phone: Why are you asking now, you never asked me if you could kiss me before.

Sam/David: Ruthie and Vincent sitting in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g.

Camden's House - Upstairs Hallway

Kevin: Whoa, what's going on with you two?

Sam: Ruthie and Vincent are talking on the phone.

David: Yeah, about kissing.

Kevin: Did you hear that?

Eric: No, what?

Sam: Ruthie and Vincent...

David: ...talking about kissing.

Martin: Did you say kissing? But it's their first date, they shouldn't even be thinking about kissing.

Matt: Who's kissing?

Sam: Ruthie...

David: ...and Vincent.

Camden's House - Attic Room

Ruthie on Phone: Thanks for calling. I'll see you tomorrow night.

Ruthie: What's going on? Are you gonna argue over who gets to sit between me and Vincent at the movies? What?

Kevin: Before any kind of dating takes place, we have to have a talk, a long talk.

Eric: I don't think I like Vincent anymore.

Ruthie: What's changed since this morning?

Eric: Huh...

Martin: You and Vincent... talking about... kissing.

Sam: Don't look at us.

David: We learned to spy on people from watching you.

Matt: And speaking of spying, I'm not just driving you and Vincent on your date, I'm gonna be watching you two like a hawk.

Annie: So, what are you gonna wear tonight?

Ruthie: This...

Lucy: Ah, but, well, don't you want to wear something special?

Ruthie: Well, this is special... these are my favorite jeans and my new sweater. I think I look fine.

Lucy: Well, I'm not saying you look, bad, it's, it's, that this is a date, your first date. Well, maybe you should dress up just a little, something other than jeans... something a little more feminine.

Annie: You have such pretty skirts. You could wear one of these.

Ruthie: I don't want to wear a skirt. I wear those skirts to church. I wanna wear something comfortable.

Lucy: Well, let's just see what's in the closet.

Ruthie: I know what's in the closet.

Lucy: Okay, hold... cute, comfortable and perfect if the weather suddenly turns on you.

Annie: Classic, formal, and yet relaxed.

Lucy: And it goes perfect with my choice.

Ruthie: I've been able to dress myself for a long time. Plus, you're not going out on the date, I'm going on the date, so I would rather not make this a big deal. And I think spending hours trying to pick out a skirt makes this date a really big deal.

Camden's House - Upstairs Hallway

Matt: I just got home. I'm gonna go get the car filled up and washed. I'll be done in plenty of time to pick up Vincent.

Ruthie: Oh, you don't have to pick him up; his parents will drop him off at seven-thirty.

Matt: No, that wouldn't be right considering it's your first date. I should pick him up and then I'll drive him over and pick you up.

Ruthie: Why?

Matt: Because Vincent should pick you up, he should come to the door and walk you to the car and open the car door for you.

Ruthie: But with you actually driving?

Matt: Yes, that's how it should work. Take my word for it.

Ruthie: Okay, I'll call and let him know, but it isn't really necessary, and neither is getting the car washed and filled up with gas. We're just going to the Promenade. It can't take that much gas to get to the Promenade. We could probably coast there on fumes.

Matt: Yeah, but if I were going out with a beautiful girl, I'd get the car fill it up and washed, so that's what I'm going to do. I want your first date to be perfect. Come to think of it, I should probably get the car detailed... I've got the time.

Kevin: How're you doin'?

Ruthie: I was doing fine, now I'm starting to get a nervous because everyone is making such a big deal out of my date.

Kevin: What do you mean?

Ruthie: Apparently a girl can't go out on a date unless she's wearing a skirt and riding around in a detailed car. I'd be fine if everyone would stop making such a big deal out of this. Everyone includes you, too. It's not like I've never been out for pizza or to a movie with a guy before.

Kevin: Someone always went with you and Peter. This is different.

Ruthie: It's not that different.

Kevin: You'll be alone.

Ruthie: Yeah, just us and all the other people who happen to be at the Promenade eating and shopping. Do you know how many times I've been to the Promenade?

Kevin: That's not the point. The point is no making out at the movies. That can lead to other things... like... you know.

Ruthie: I'm not going to be making out in a public and what makes you think I would do something like that?

Kevin: It's not that I don't trust you, I don't trust him. I don't trust any teenage boy. I'm a cop. Trust me, teenage boys are trouble.

Ruthie: Every teenage boy?

Kevin: Maybe not, but most of them get into trouble at some time and they get in trouble with girls. Make sure you're not the girl. Got it?

Ruthie: Got it... and thanks for the sensitive and informative talk. But are you sure it's Vincent you don't trust or are you just afraid I have the same genetic makeup as Lucy the make-out queen?

Kevin: Okay, Lucy and I made out on the first date because it was love at first sight, and she was over eighteen and so was I. You were referring to Lucy and me, right?

Ruthie: Yeah, of course. I was just on my way downstairs to go get some water. I'm very thirsty; all this talk about my date has made my throat dry.

Camden's House - Kitchen

Eric: Hey, big night, huh?

Ruthie: Not as big as everyone is trying to make it, pizza plus movie equals no big deal.

Eric: Don't forget to add the guy you like, which happens to make it a big deal.

Ruthie: Yeah, I like him. Which reminds me, I gotta call him.

Eric: Is it personal, so you need privacy?

Ruthie: Why break the pattern now? No, thanks, I don't need any privacy.

Phone: (ringing)

Answering Machine: Sorry, we're out. Please leave a message.

Answering Machine: (beep)

Ruthie on Phone: Hi, Vincent, it's Ruthie. Matt is gonna pick you up at your house at 7:30 and then he's gonna drive back over to my house and pick me up. It's a long story. I'll see you later. Bye...

Eric: That's good... that way he can come up to the door and walk you to the car.

Ruthie: Yeah, but you've already met Vincent and so has mom, so I'm not expecting you to do some weird interrogation or take pictures or anything... please.

Eric: No, of course not.

Ruthie: Can I get that in writing?

Eric: (chuckles)

Camden's House - Garage Apartment

Mac: Isn't it illegal to do your homework on a Friday night?

Martin: It's better than doing it Saturday night.

Mac: You're forgetting about Sunday night. That's when I do my homework... me and all the normal people. Besides, you can't do your homework tonight anyways, we're going out.

Martin: Where?

Mac: Wherever Ruthie's going.

Martin: We can't follow her around on her date. Can we?

Mac: I don't see know why not. Where are they going?

Martin: To a movie at the Promenade and then for pizza at Pete's.

Mac: That shouldn't be too hard. That's where we usually hang out.

Martin: Yeah, we could probably make it look like we're not just watching them; everyone goes to the Promenade on Friday night. Shouldn't be any big deal, right? We don't even have to really be following them, we can just be there.

Mac: Yeah, so if we happen to see Ruthie and Vincent on their date, it would be a coincidence, not something we planned. I don't want to get her upset or anything because you never know what'll happen, you know, in the future.

Martin: No, I don't know. You don't have any weird ideas like actually dating Ruthie some time in the future, do you?

Mac: Of course not. Maybe, you know, if we were both at the same college in a few years and if she were a freshman in college and I, I was a junior... you know, maybe.

Martin: No, just don't even think about it.

Mac: Why not?

Martin: Because I know you, that's why not.

Mac: Are you saying I'm not good enough to go out with Ruthie?

Martin: It's not a matter of not being good enough, she's just young and innocent and sweet and...

Mac: You're not thinking about dating her in the future, are you?

Martin: No, no, I'm not, she's like a sister to me. You even said she was like a sister to you remember? When you introduced her to those girls, you said Ruthie was like a younger sister. You can't date your sister.

Mac: Are you trying to convince me or yourself?

Martin: I would never date Ruthie.

Mac: If you never lived with the Camdens and you just met her, would you ask her out?

Martin: No, she's a nice girl and she's really cute and I like her... I, I can't think of her in terms of dating.

Mac: I can't either, except maybe in a few years. Like I said, girls grow up, and that includes Ruthie.

Martin: Well let's just make sure she doesn't grow up too fast.

Camden's House - Sam and David's Room

Sam: I think we should go with Ruthie to the movie and out for pizza.

David: Yeah, I think so, too.

Sam: I think she'll let us go with her.

David: Sure, she always lets us go with her, she likes us.

Sam: It's a special night. I'm surprised she didn't include us.

David: She probably just forgot.

Sam: We should put our clothes back on.

David: It's a date, we should wear something nice.

Sam: Yeah, like we're going to church.

Camden's House - Attic Room

Lucy: Hey, ah, we've put together some outfits. Do you want to see them?

Ruthie: Not really.

Annie: Oh, come on... let us be part of this. There's only one first date.

Lucy: Yeah, the first date is special, and getting ready is half the fun. I mean I remember my first date... Jimmy Moon.

Annie: Ooohhh...

Ruthie: Did you wear a skirt?

Lucy: I don't remember. I just remembered that he came over and we watched a French film and it was ah, so romantic.

Ruthie: That wasn't a real date, you were just in the living room.

Lucy: It was a date to me, I was only thirteen.

Ruthie: Did you make out with him?

Lucy: I, I kissed him.

Ruthie: Who did you first person you made out with?

Lucy: Ah, well, there was big lips and... ugh!... he was a horrible kisser. Then there was Robbie's brother and oh, he was a great kisser.

Ruthie: Which one?

Lucy: Both of them.

Annie: I'm not sure I'm comfortable with this conversation.

Ruthie: Who was your first date?

Annie: Jack... oh, he was something else. He had two best friends, Sam and Hal. They all wanted to date me.

Ruthie: Did you date them?

Annie: Well, yeah, there was quite a competition going on for a while, but of course the three of them ended up not being friends, but I'm... but, but you don't need to be making out on your first date.

Ruthie: Oh, of course not, but I have already kissed this guy.

Annie: Yeah, I heard that.

Lucy: Wait, ah, ah, I haven't hear that.

Lucy: When did you kiss him?

Ruthie: When he was over that first night with his parents.

Lucy: And...?

Ruthie: And he kissed me, and I liked it.

Annie: Well, you know sometimes when a girl likes a boy...

Lucy: And a boy likes a girl...

Ruthie: If you think the three of us are going to have some awkward sex talk, forget it. Kevin already talked to me and that's all the awkward I can take for one night.

Lucy: I, I told him not to do that.

Annie: Why would he do that?

Lucy: (sighs)

Lucy: Because he thinks you and dad aren't that effective.

Eric: Is that right?

Kevin: I hate to disturb you, Miss Make-out Queen, but your daughter is calling.

Ruthie: You told me how much you and Kevin loved making out when you first met.

Lucy: Oh... yeah... that.

Kevin: I think she's a little young to know every detail of our courtship.

Lucy: Sorry...

Eric: So are you almost ready?

Ruthie: I've been ready since yesterday.

Sam: Okay...

David: We're ready...

Annie: Didn't we just put on your pajamas on?

Sam: Yeah...

David: But we decided to go on the date with Ruthie.

Ruthie: It's a date, you can't go... sorry.

Annie: This is very special night. It's just Ruthie and Vincent going out to a movie and out for pizza alone... just the two of them.

Eric: I don't know why they can't go.

Vincent's House - Front Door

Bell: (rings)

Door: (knock)

Matt: Hey, Vincent... it's Matt! It's Ruthie's brother, Matt Camden.

Irving: Hey, they're not at home.

Matt: What?

Irving: They left hours ago... the whole family. They're not home.

Camden's House - Living Room

Eric: You look beautiful.

Annie: That outfit is just perfect.

Lucy: It really is.

Ruthie: Okay, I love you all, but if you love me, you'll leave me. Please everyone stop making a big deal out of this. Just... everyone... out. I thought I said no pictures.

Kevin: Sorry, I thought the flash was off.

Eric: We just want to see you off.

Ruthie: Well, I'm sure you'll be waiting by the door when I get home. Look, I'm wearing an outfit Mom and Lucy picked out for me. I'm letting Matt drive me and Vincent, I had a talk with Kevin, and... I'd appreciate it, Dad, if you don't get too emotional. I know this is a big deal for you, but, please leave.

Sam: We're going with you.

David: Yeah...

Ruthie: You can't go... you can't. It's a date. I'll do something with you tomorrow, promise.

Sam: But we put on a suit for this.

David: We even zipped on our own ties.

Ruthie: Well, thanks, I appreciate the effort, but I never said you could go, and you can't.

Sam: What will you do if he ties to kiss you?

Ruthie: I plan to kiss him back... there's nothing wrong with a simple goodnight kiss.

David: We don't like it.

Ruthie: You don't have to like it, scoot.

Vincent's House

Matt: Where is this kid? I was supposed to pick him up for a date with my sister. It's, it's her first date. It has to be perfect; this is the worst thing that could've happened.

Irving: Oh, Vincent's going out with Ruthie? You're Matt Camden, right? Irving Piel... your pharmacist... Piel's Pharmacy on the Promenade.

Matt: Well, you know kid... this Vincent?

Irving: Ah, Vincent's okay. He probably just got scared and left. Are you gonna wait?

Matt: Yes, I'm gonna wait here all night if I have to. Could you do me a favor? I'm gonna call my dad, but I need you to ask for him in case my sister answers the phone. Don't worry, I'm a doctor.

Irving: Not yet.

Camden's House - Kitchen / Vincent's House

Phone: (rings)

Eric on Phone: Hello?

Irving on Phone: Oh, hello, can I speak to dad?

Eric on Phone: Whose dad?

Matt on Phone: We have a problem.

Eric: We have a problem.

Annie: What's the problem?

Matt on Phone: Vincent is not home. He and his family left, the three of them are AWOL.

Eric on Phone: AWOL...?

Martin: Who's AWOL?

Matt on Phone: I'm gonna wait for him. I'll call you back later. Bye.

Matt: So what do you know about this Vincent kid?

Camden's House - Kitchen

Phone: (rings)

Ruthie: Hello?

Camden's House - Hallway / Insurance Company

Vincent on Phone: Hey Ruthie, guess what?

Ruthie on Phone: What?

Vincent on Phone: I'm gonna pick you up for our date tonight.

Ruthie on Phone: But, I thought you weren't allowed to drive at night.

Vincent on Phone: Well, my parents said that since I've had my license for six months, they trust me to drive tonight.

Vincent on Phone: We just needed to get the insurance paperwork finalized and I didn't say anything yesterday you know, because... I wanted to surprise you. But, my parents and I just got my insurance set up, so I'll be right over to pick you up.

Ruthie on Phone: So we're going out tonight, just the two of us?

Vincent on Phone: Yep...

Ruthie on Phone: Great...

Vincent on Phone: Well look, I don't wanna be late so my parents are coming with me, but then we'll drop them off and the rest of the night it's just the two of us.

Ruthie on Phone: Great... bye, Vincent.

Vincent on Phone: Bye, Ruthie.

Phone: (rings)

Ruthie on Phone: Hello?

Camden's House - Hallway / Vincent's House

Matt on Phone: Hi, Ruthie.

Ruthie on Phone: Where are you?

Matt on Phone: I, I went to pick Vincent up but his dad was having pains in his side, and his neighbor, Irving, said they went to the hospital. So, I'm gonna go right over there and see what's going on. I'll call you back.

Camden's House - Hallway

Ruthie: What's going on?

Annie: (shrugs)

Eric: Nothing...

Annie: I'm just gonna check on the baby and the boys.

Eric: I'll just go help Annie check on the baby and the boys.

Camden's House - Upstairs Hallway

Annie: Ruthie is getting stood up.

Kevin: Where does this kid live? Nobody stands Ruthie up and gets away with it.

Eric: It doesn't matter where he lives; he's not home... Matt's over there.

Lucy: This is horrible. What should we do? I mean, Ruthie cannot be stood up on her first date. She can't find out about this. That's not the memory she should have.

Sam: What's happening?

David: What's going on?

Camden's House - Kitchen

Mac: Hey, Ruthie.

Ruthie: Hi, where's Martin?

Mac: Oh, we were supposed to go out, but Martin wants to do his homework.

Ruthie: Oh...

Mac: You're supposed to go out too, aren't you?

Ruthie: Yeah, my date is running a little late.

Mac: I'm going to get some water, you want some?

Ruthie: Sure...

Mac: You know, if this guy doesn't get here soon, then maybe we could hang out together... as friends... just hanging out.

Ruthie: What are you talking about?

Mac: You know, in high school, there's a big difference between fifteen and seventeen, but if there wasn't a big difference in fifteen and seventeen, I have to tell you, I'd be interested in taking you out myself.

Ruthie: What do you know?

Mac: What?

Ruthie: Martin told you?

Mac: I have no idea what you're talking about.

Ruthie: Thanks a lot.

Martin: For...?

Ruthie: Do I look stupid? You told him.

Camden's House - Upstairs Hallway

Annie: We should have known better than to, to let her plan a date with some guy whose parents know nothing about parenting.

Eric: It's not my fault, I didn't know the guy was going to stand her up.

Kevin: Shhhhh...

Ruthie: What's going on?

Sam: You're getting stood up.

David: But can we still go out?

Ruthie: Are you sure I'm getting stood up? I mean maybe Vincent's just running a little late.

Annie: Yeah...

Eric: Huhm...

Ruthie: Matt called... he said Vincent's dad went to the hospital with pains in his side, so he said he was going over to the emergency room to see if he can find anything out.

Eric: Oh, we, we didn't know.

Ruthie: Yeah, that's what Matt said, but I don't know if I believe him.

Lucy: Ah, maybe you and my dad can go check on the baby with Sam and David.

Eric: Sure, come on guys.

Lucy: You know, ah, sometimes guys get scared about dating and relationships and that kind of thing, and they do stupid things.

Ruthie: Really?

Annie: Yes, and sometimes they, they make plans and then they think about those plans too much and then sometimes well, then they just can't go through with those plans. It happens. It used to happen to you all the time, right?

Lucy: Well, not all the time.

Ruthie: Well, it's not going to happen to me. I'm gonna go downstairs and sit on the couch and wait for Vincent. I'll wait all night if I have to, I'll wait tomorrow night and the next night and every night for years to come until Vincent rings the doorbell and we go out together on my first real date.

Camden's House - Foyer

Bell: (rings)

Vincent: Hi...

Ruthie: Hi...

Annie: Hi...

Ruthie: See? I told you, he's here.

Eric: So Matt found you?

Ruthie: I left you a message at your home that Matt was gonna pick you up at your house, so he's probably still here.

Vincent: So if he's there and he didn't know I was coming here, all of you thought I stood her up?

Eric: No, of, of, of course not, don't be silly.

Phone: (rings)

Martin: Oh, I'll get it.

Vincent: See, my mom and dad took me by the insurance office just to make sure I'm covered, you know, as a real driver, and um, they're in the car right now, but then we're gonna drop them off and then we're, we're gonna go to the Promenade.

Kevin: Hold on just a minute, the two of you in a car together, alone?

Martin: It's Matt.

Ruthie on Phone: Hello...?

Camden's House - Foyer / Vincent's House

Matt on Phone: Hi Ruthie... it's looking pretty bad...

Matt on Phone: ...it's a cute appendicitis, they're going to have to operate, but, but I'll stand by.

Matt on Phone: I guess you'll have to reschedule your date.

Ruthie on Phone: Well, of course, someone should be with Vincent.

Matt on Phone: Right...

Ruthie on Phone: I'll ask dad to take me over to the hospital so I can wait with him.

Camden's House - Foyer

Eric: Ah, so, Vincent, it's your first time driving alone?

Vincent: Well, technically, I've been driving for six months.

Eric: Yes, but it's nighttime, and I, I don't know about this.

Kevin: I don't think it's a good idea.

Martin: Definitely not.

Mac: No way.

Sam: Bad idea.

David: Really bad idea.

Annie: I'm sure that Vincent is a good driver.

Vincent: I am, I got an "A" in drivers training the third time I took it. The first two times I just considered practice.

Lucy: I'm sure they'll be fine.

Annie: You two go, have a nice time. Don't be late.

Vincent: Thank you.

Annie: (sighs)

Annie: Go ahead, follow them, you know you want to.

Vincent's House

Margie: Hello...

Bill: What are you doing here?

Matt: So it, it wasn't appendicitis? That's, that's great!

Margie: Have fun you two.

Bill: See you later, have a good time.

Margie: Thank you for offering to drive Vincent and Ruthie, but Vincent can drive now, there's no need.

Matt: Mom and dad are okay with this?

Ruthie: Yep, and by the way, thanks. If he had stood me up, that was a really good story.

Matt: No it wasn't, I panicked. You look too young to drive.

Vincent: But I have a license and insurance.

Ruthie: We're blocks from the Promenade.

Matt: So maybe you could just walk.

Ruthie: Or maybe not.

Bill: It happens all the time.

Matt: Goodnight...

Camden's House - Nursery

Lucy: Would you feel better if Ruthie went out with a group?

Annie: (sighs)

Annie: I'd feel better if Ruthie was right here with us. Honestly, I don't understand the whole dating in groups thing anyway. I should think when you go out with someone, you would want that person to pay attention to you, and get to know you. Otherwise, your memory of that date is filled with other people.

Lucy: Yeah, I'm nit sure about the group dating thing either. Seems to make it all a little casual, seems to go from hanging out to hooking up.

Annie: Well, I don't know about that, but it just seems like the old-fashioned way is the best way. But, then again, my little baby is alone with a guy.

Lucy: Yeah...

Annie: (sighs)

Movie Theater

Vincent: So, should I kiss you?

Ruthie: Yeah... kiss me... but make it quick.

Matt: Can I trade seats with you so I have better aim?

Martin: No way, I can see things better from where I'm sitting.

Kevin: If that's the case, then I definitely want to switch seats with you.

Eric: I'd actually like to move up a couple of rows.

Mac: I'm fine where I am at.

Usher: I think you should just let them have their first date in peace. Come on, let's go.

Kevin: I'm a police officer.

Usher: Then you should know better.

Camden's House - Foyer

Matt: Hey...

Ruthie: Goodnight...

Vincent: Goodnight...

Matt: You are way too interested in kissing.

Ruthie: I can't help it, I'm a Camden.

Matt: (chuckles)

Matt: Did you have a nice time?

Ruthie: Yeah, I did. Sorry you all got kicked out of the movies, the ending was great.

Matt: Will you be going out with Vincent again?

Ruthie: I don't know, but from what I understand, now begins the painful process of waiting for him to call.

Matt: I was never good at dating... dating stinks. Marriage is great, but dating stinks. I'm happy I don't have to do it again.

Ruthie: Somehow I think it's going to be different for me. Besides, the more you date, the better you get at it.

Ruthie: Just kidding. Goodnight...

Matt: Goodnight...

Camden's House - Upstairs Hallway

Ruthie: Goodnight, Mom. Goodnight, Dad.

Eric: Ah, did you have a good time?

Ruthie: Yeah, pretty good, I got through it.

Eric: What does that mean?

Annie: Means she likes him, but she doesn't want us to know.

Camden's House - Attic Room

Song: "Kiss Me"

Camden's House - Eric and Annie's Room

Eric: "Oh, kiss me beneath the milky twilight, lead me out on the moonlit floor..."

Annie: I told you... she had a good time.

Eric: Thank God.

Camden's House - Attic Room

Ruthie: Thanks...
