#915 : Chant d'amour

Sam/David: Sssshhhh...

Sam: Are we still making mommy pancakes for breakfast?

Eric: Sure...

David: Are the pancakes just for her?

Eric: Well, we're gonna surprise mommy by givin' her breakfast in bed, but we call all have some pancakes, with syrup and butter, lots of butter and ah, maybe some bacon, some nice fatty... bacon.

Ruthie: I didn't think you could have bacon. I thought that's why you had heart problems, too much bacon.

Eric: True, but it's Valentine's Day and dry toast just is not romantic.

Ruthie: And bacon is?

Eric: Cupid seems to have hit you on the wrong side of the head this morning.

Ruthie: Yeah, Cupid, right. I'm not in the mood for Valentine's.

Sam/David: Sssshhh...

Ruthie: She's up, okay? Oh, and by the way, happy birthday.

Sam: Thank you.

David: Thank you.

Ruthie: What? Oh, yeah, the present. I'm gonna clean your room for an entire week.

Sam: Wow...

Sam/David: Thanks...

Annie: What's goin' on?

Eric/Sam/David: Happy Valentine's Day.

Annie: Thanks... and happy birthday.

Annie: I suppose you want me to make you some pancakes?

Eric: Well, we were gonna surprise you by giving you pancakes in bed.

Annie: Ohhh...

Annie: ...no bacon...

Eric: Okay, no bacon.

Annie: It's for you... because I love you.

Eric: I love you, too.

Ruthie: Enough already.

Annie: Okay, well I guess I'll go upstairs and wait for my pancakes.

Eric: Love is sweeping the country.

Sam/David/Eric: Waves are hugging the shore.

Song: Nice Work If You Can Get It

Martin: Where are you goin'?

Ruthie: Nowhere...

Martin: What's wrong?

Ruthie: I hate Valentine's Day.

Martin: Okay, I should be the one to hate Valentine's Day. I have nobody, you have Vincent.

Martin: What?

Ruthie: Vincent hasn't called me in three days.

Martin: Oh... it's just a stupid, made-up holiday anyway. It's no big deal.

Martin: Hi...

Zoe: Hi...

Martin: What's this?

Zoe: It's a valentine. I, I thought it was about time I apologized to you, and I figure what better day to do it than on Valentine's Day?

Ruthie: Holding hands at midnight, 'neath a starry sky... nice work if you can get it and you can get it if you try. Strolling with one boy, sighing sigh after sigh... nice work if you can get it and you can get it if you try. Just imagine someone, waiting at the cottage door, where two hearts become one who could ask for anything more? Loving one who loves you and then taking that vow... nice work if you can get it and if you get it... won't you tell me how?

Camden's House - Laundry Room - Kitchen

Eric: Yes, boys, you have to go to school. Valentine's Day is...

Eric: ...just a made-up holiday; it's not a real holiday. Let's go. We're off.

Annie: Good, yeah... what about the kitchen?

Eric: Oh, I'll get it when I get back.

Annie: Yeah, from taking the boys to school?

Eric: Well, no, I have to run by the church and make a few calls, but I'll be back. Just leave everything right where it is.

Annie: Well, you mean all those plates with the syrup on them, I should leave them in the sink?

Eric: I was going to get them, but I was getting the boys ready for school.

Eric: Your point being?

Annie: My point being, that ah, you put your favorite red socks in with a white load of laundry.

Eric: I'll take care of it... my mistake.

Annie: Yes, your mistake. If you didn't love those stupid socks so much...

Eric: You mean if you didn't love those stupid sock so much.

Annie: Excuse me? You love the red socks. Why do you think I buy them for you? Do you think I have some deep attachment to red socks?

Eric: Well, you've given me a pair of red socks every Valentine's Day since our first, so something tells me it's not me, but you who loves the red socks.

Annie: You've always worn red socks; you were wearing red socks when I met you.

Eric: I don't remember ever owning red socks until you bought them for me, but let's not argue. If you say I've always worn red socks...

Annie: You have always worn red socks.

Sam: We're ready.

David: We've got our valentines for everyone at school.

Eric: Don't make any dinner plans, I'm gonna pick up a picnic basket at the French bakery and a bottle of champagne and tonight we're gonna get some alone time... you and I, by ourselves. Lucy's gonna be home so she can watch the boys, right? All right, bye... Come on.

Annie: Happy Valentine's Day to me. Woo whoo...

Simon's Apartment

Anna: I know it's Valentine's Day, but I can't, I, I just can't. We just met.

Simon: Oh, believe me, I, I don't wanna go too far too fast either, but I just want this feeling to last forever.

Anna: I can't believe we just met last night and I feel like this.

Simon: Well, I can't believe it either, but it was Valentine's Day Eve.

Anna: Is there such a thing as Valentine's Day Eve?

Simon: Oh, I don't know, but it feels like the real thing.

Anna: It feels like the real thing, but can it be the real thing? Is there really love at first sight?

Simon: All I know is I saw you and I fell in love. So, do you have any classes this afternoon?

Anna: No...

Simon: Well, neither do I, so, we can hang out here or we can go for a drive.

Anna: I'd love to see Glenoak, see your house, where you grew up, meet your family. Staying up all night talking to you was, was really wonderful. You're wonderful.

Simon: I'd love to show you Glenoak, but I think we should save meeting the family, not put the, the whole love at first sight theory to the test right away.

Anna: All right...

Simon: So you wanna see Glenoak?

Anna: I'd love to.

Simon: Well, let's go.

Anna: I love that you wanna do whatever I wanna do.

Simon: I love that you love that I wanna do whatever you wanna do.

Camden's House - Kevin and Lucy's Room

Lucy: The good news is Savannah is sleeping more; the bad news is she's eating more. What are you doing?

Kevin: I'm going to work, remember?

Lucy: No, I don't remember.

Kevin: I told you last week, that I was going back to work this week.

Lucy: But it's Valentine's Day.

Kevin: I'll be home before midnight and it will still be Valentine's Day.

Lucy: Midnight...?

Kevin: Captain Michaels asked if I could put in a few extra hours. They're a little sort-handed today and I have been off for a while.

Lucy: Midnight...

Kevin: Before midnight...

Lucy: Well, what am I supposed to do?

Kevin: I thought you'd be busy with the baby.

Lucy: And I thought you'd be busy with me.

Kevin: I was busy with you and now I've got to get busy with my job so we can pay for that new house.

Lucy: We've already paid off the house. It's not like I don't know that we have money and a new house... which I still haven't seen.

Kevin: You're the one who won't leave Savannah for five minutes to go look at it.

Lucy: So?

Kevin: So... it's not my fault you haven't seen the house.

Lucy: Really? Who got me pregnant and whose baby is it in there? I do believe it is your fault, Mr. Kinkirk.

Kevin: I've gotta go. I love you.

Lucy: No you don't, if you loved me, you wouldn't be abandoning me on Valentine's Day.

Kevin: We're gonna spend a lifetime of Valentine's Days together. Besides, we don't need Valentine's Day. I love you three-hundred and sixty-five days a year.

Kevin: You were meant for me and I was meant for you. Natured patterned you and when she was done you were all the sweet things rolled into one. You're like a plaintive melody that never lets me free... for I'm content. The angels must have sent you and they meant you just for me... for I'm content. The angels must have sent you and they meant you just for me.

Kevin: Gotta get to work.

Song: You Are My Lucky Star

Eric: (humming) You Are My Lucky Star

Sam/David: You have reached the Camden residence. Nobody can talk to you.

Annie: No one is here to take your call.

Sam/David: No one is here to take your call.

Annie: Please leave a message.

Sam/David: So, please leave a message.

Annie: And we'll call you back.

Sam/David: And we'll call you back... beeeeeppp...

Answering Machine: Beep...

Eric on Phone: Hi, honey, it's me. Ah, listen, I just, just wanna apologize for not getting to the dishes before I left and for the laundry. I'll, I'll take care of everything as, as soon as I get home, and I promise I'll be home early and I'm really sorry if I didn't remember owning red socks before meeting you, I'm sorry about the whole morning. I love you.

Eric: You are my lucky star. I saw you from afar... two lovely eyes at me. They were gleaming... beaming, I was star struck. You're all my lucky charms, I'm lucky in your arms. You've opened Heaven's portal here on earth for this poor mortal. You are my lucky, lucky star.

Camden's House - Kitchen - Laundering Room

Annie: How could you not know that you've always worn red socks? How could you not know you put them in the wash with everything else?

Annie: (sighs)

Annie: How could you think that I would like to leave dirty dishes in my sink all day?

Lucy: I can't believe Kevin went to work. He went to work on Valentine's Day... of all days.

Annie: Well, he had to go back to work sometime.

Lucy: But today?

Annie: Well, probably some of the other guys who haven't had time off wanted to be with their wives and girlfriends today. You know it's just a stupid, made-up holiday anyway.

Lucy: What's with you?

Annie: Nothing's with me. I just don't think Kevin going back to work is anything to fight about on Valentine's Day. I mean, working is a good thing. Kevin's a responsible man who is taking care of his wife and his daughter.

Lucy: Did you and dad have a fight?

Annie: No, not really.

Lucy: What does not really mean?

Annie: It means your dad and I aren't fighting. We're just, you know, very much in love, very, very much in love, still after years and years of marriage, we're just crazy about each other.

Lucy: So what are you two lovebirds doing for Valentine's Day?

Annie: Oh, I don't know... dishes, laundry, sandwiches. In fact I hafta go make a birthday cake for the twins now.

High School - Hallway

Vincent: So... happy Valentine's Day. Fine...

Ruthie: You haven't called me in three days.

Vincent: No, you haven't called me in three days.

Ruthie: I called you last.

Vincent: What?

Ruthie: I called you last.

Vincent: What does that have to do with anything?

Ruthie: Don't try to put this off on me. You could have called me if you wanted to.

Vincent: I was just about to say the same thing to you.

Ruthie: So that why you were walking past me with that girl, because you were angry that I didn't call you? Well two can play this game, Mister.

Guy: Do I know you?

Ruthie: Ruthie Camden... nice to meet you and happy Valentine's Day, all right?

Guy: All right...

Promenade

Annie: Hi...

Anna: Hi...

Annie: That was my son you were making out with. I'm Simon's mother.

Anna: Oh... hi, I'm Anna.

Annie: Nice to meet you. What are you doing here? Why aren't you and Simon at school, in class?

Anna: Well, neither of us had a class this afternoon, so we decided to drive down to Glenoak and spend the afternoon here.

Annie: Ah, I see. When did you two meet?

Anna: We just met last night.

Annie: Ah, well, that would make you his new girlfriend, right? Simon's been dating quite a, quite a lot this year.

Anna: Oh, I see.

Annie: Yeah, just, just so you know... before you do something... you shouldn't do.

Annie: Have you talked to the Man upstairs 'cause He wants to hear from you. Have you talked to the Man upstairs? He will always see you through. Have you talked to the Man upstairs 'cause He wants to hear from you. Have you talked to the Man upstairs? He will always see you though. And when trouble ever troubles you, don't you run and hide 'cause if you ever need a friend, He'll be right there by your side and He wants to here from you.

Annie: Think about it. Think about what you're doing, okay?

Anna: That was your mother?

Simon: 'Fraid so.

Anna: How many girlfriends have you had? How many girlfriends have you had this year?

Simon: You're the first one since January, I swear.

Anna: Okay, calendar year. How many since last Valentine's Day?

Simon: A few.

Anna: You were in love with all of them? So this happens to you all the time, admit it?

Simon: No, this doesn't happen to me all the time. I, I, just... I've, I've always wanted to be in love and now I am.

Anna: And I'm different from Cecilia, how?

Simon: That was, that was high school.

Anna: And the summer after the first year of college.

Simon: Well...

Anna: And Georgia, you were with her, then went back to Cecilia, then back to Georgia, who you just broke up with because she lied to you about having a baby. Were you going to marry her, when you thought she was having a baby?

Simon: Well... uh... yeah... I thought I should.

Anna: But you weren't in love with her.

Simon: No, not like I'm in love with you.

Anna: I think we should get back to school. I've some studying to do, and I think it's gonna be a long drive back.

High School - Baseball Field - Bleachers

Song: Accentuate the Positive

Vincent: Hey, what's going on?

Ruthie: Nothing... just observing the mammalian imperative.

Vincent: Well, that sounds fascinating.

Ruthie: It's not. It's the most boring, predictable thing in the world. Boy throws ball in display of masculine competence. Girl flutters eyelashes in response then blows him a kiss.

Vincent: (laughs)

Ruthie: Please...

Vincent: Well, you have something against romance?

Ruthie: It's not romance, it's high school hormones. Romance has nothing to do with it.

Vincent: I don't know, they're flirting with each other, I think flirting kind of romantic.

Ruthie: Whatever...

Vincent: It was only a couple of weeks ago that I was flirting with you and you were flirting with me. Look, I'm sorry I didn't call you.

Ruthie: Yeah, well, the point is you didn't. Then you had to go show off and walk right past me with someone else.

Vincent: I admit I was trying to get your attention.

Ruthie: Because...?

Vincent: Because it's Valentine's Day and I like you. How come I can get over you not calling me, but you can't you get over me not calling you? Maybe you're just afraid of getting hurt. Everyone's afraid of that.

Ruthie: I'm not afraid of anything.

Vincent: Look, I'm not perfect, but you're not perfect either.

Vincent: You've got to accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative. Latch on to the affirmative. Don't mess with Mister In-Between. You've got to spread joy up to the maximum, bring gloom down to the minimum. Have faith or pandemonium, liable to walk upon the scene. To illustrate my last remark, Jonah in the whale, Noah in the ark... what did they do, just when everything looked so dark? Man, they said we better accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative, latch on to the affirmative. Don't mess with Mister In-Between.

Ruthie: Really... just a phone call would have been fine.

Vincent: Ask your dad if we can go out tonight, huh?

Ruthie: It's a school night.

Vincent: It's Valentine's Day.

Ruthie: It's also Sam's and David's birthday. Why don't you just call me?

Vincent: All right.

Zoe: So, it's Valentine's Day.

Martin: It is.

Zoe: If you wanted to... you know, I wouldn't be opposed to it.

Martin: I would.

Zoe: Well, we could just hang out and talk.

Martin: That I could do.

Police Station

Capt. Michaels: Hey Kevin, thanks for coming in.

Kevin: No problem... nice to be back.

Capt. Michaels: How are Lucy and Savannah?

Kevin: They're fine.

Capt. Michaels: Hope we didn't ruin Valentine's Day for you.

Kevin: No, Valentine's Day doesn't mean that much to me anyway.

Capt. Michaels: Didn't you prose to Lucy on Valentine's Day?

Kevin: Yeah...

Capt. Michaels: So it's not just Valentine's Day, it's the anniversary of your engagement.

Kevin: Yeah, but that doesn't really count, does it? It's not like it's a real anniversary. Our wedding day is our anniversary now.

Capt. Michaels: But you did get something for her, right? You're not going home from here empty handed or anything stupid like that are you?

Kevin: I got her a baby and a house.

Capt. Michaels: Not for Valentine's.

Kevin: I'm working.

Capt. Michaels: You haven't been working for the past month.

Kevin: I've been doing baby stuff for the past month.

Capt. Michaels: Well, I'm glad we had this little argument, now you don't have to have it with Lucy when you get home.

Kevin: I can't just leave and go get something for her. I'm working and when I get off, nothing will be open.

Capt. Michaels: Yeah, I remember when I was married and I used to try to explain the same thing to my wife. Of course, now I'm divorced. You know what a florist is, right?

Kevin: Of course I know.

Capt. Michaels: Well?

Kevin: I'll call one.

Capt. Michaels: Now you're thinking.

Kevin on Phone: I'd like to send a dozen roses to my wife. How can you be out of roses, it's Valentine's Day. Thanks... Hi, I'd like to send some roses to my wife. Why is that funny?

Camden's House - Kitchen

Sam: Happy Valentine's Day!

David: Happy Valentine's Day!

Sam/David: Happy Valentine's Day! Happy Valentine's Day! Happy Valentine's Day!

Annie: Whoever had the brilliant idea of handing out Valentine's Day cupcakes at the end of the day is obviously not the mother of twins.

Sam/David: Cupcakes! Cupcakes! We want cupcakes!

Annie: You've had enough cupcakes.

David: I had three.

Sam: I had ten.

David: I had a hundred!

Sam: I had fifty hundred!

David: I had fifty-million-hundred!

Sam: When are we having birthday cake?

Annie: How about birthday fruit?

Sam/David: Nooo! Birthday cake! Birthday cake!

Annie: After you eat your dinner. Now why don't you take Happy and go outside in the backyard and... run and scream all you want.

Sam/David: Yeah...

Happy: (barks)

Annie: Do you need anything?

Lucy: Actually, I wanted to make cupcakes. I have to do something. I didn't give Kevin anything for Valentine's... well, I mean other than guilt for going back to work.

Annie: So just greet him at the door with a smile and a kiss and an apology, and tell him how much you love him.

Lucy: Well, did you buy dad anything?

Annie: I might have.

Lucy: Well, what did you buy dad?

Annie: It's just a little something. It's, it's personal.

Lucy: Fine... I want to give Kevin a little something, too. I want to bake him something.

Annie: Kevin's working, he's not going to have anything for you, you two have each other, just let that be enough.

Lucy: I'm sure Kevin has something for me.

Lucy: I'll clean up. I promise.

Annie: The kitchen is all yours.

Lucy: Well, aren't you going to cook dinner?

Annie: Ah, no, I'm not. Sandwiches, remember? Your father's gonna bringing home a picnic basket from the French bakery. Then I'm gonna give the boys their birthday dinner, then their birthday cake, and then I thought maybe you can keep an eye on them while your dad and I have some time to ourselves.

Lucy: Oh, well, I, I have to watch Savannah and... okay... I'm still putting together gifts for them. I haven't even finished them. I'm, I'm making them Batman capes.

Annie: Oh, they'll love that. Better get to work.

Lucy: Great... happy Valentine's Day to me.

Glenoak Police Station

Kevin on Phone: You have to be kidding? What about pink roses... yellow roses... white roses... do you have any kind of roses... something that looks like roses? Do you have any kind of red flowers... any flowers?

Simon's Apartment / Camden's House - Kitchen

Phone: (rings)

Sam/David on Phone: Camden house.

Simon on Phone: Hi, happy birthday.

Sam on Phone: Thank you.

David on Phone: And thanks for the cards.

Sam on Phone: What are you doing?

Simon on Phone: Nothing... absolutely nothing.

Simon's Apartment

Door: (knock)

Anna: So, where were we?

Simon: I think we're falling in love.

Camden's House - Living Room

Zoe: Okay, so you've had only one serious girlfriend, that's it?

Martin: That's it. I don't think I'm ready for a serious girlfriend.

Zoe: Well, what about a casual girlfriend?

Martin: If that mean what about casual sex... then no... I'm not really interested.

Zoe: You're just not playing hard to get, are you?

Martin: No...

Zoe: All right... well, happy Valentine's Day anyway.

Martin: Happy Valentine's Day.

Camden's House - Kitchen

Phone: (rings)

Ruthie on Phone: Hello...?

Vincent on Phone: Hi, Ruthie.

Ruthie on Phone: Hi, Vincent.

Vincent on Phone: Look it... I really wanted to come over.

Ruthie on Phone: I don't know... I felt like such an idiot for acting jealous that I didn't think I could face you for an entire evening. I'm just hoping the feeling will wear off.

Vincent on Phone: Well, I think I might have something that will cheer you up.

Ruthie on Phone: No, really I think it's gonna take time. I really like you. I mean, if I accentuate the positive here, actually not that flawed.

Vincent on Phone: Ah, thanks. Well ah, could you just open the back door now?

Door: (knock)

Vincent on Phone: That's me. Open up, okay... I'll only stay a minute, I promise.

Ruthie: For me?

Vincent: Yeah, I cut them from my mom's rose bushes.

Ruthie: Thanks.

Vincent: Happy Valentine's Day.

Ruthie: Happy Valentine's Day.

Vincent: I'll see you in school tomorrow. Goodnight...

Ruthie: Goodnight...

Kevin: Where'd you get those?

Ruthie: Vincent...

Kevin: I'll give you a hundred bucks.

Camden's House - Kevin and Lucy's Room

Kevin: Sorry I missed dinner. I was working.

Lucy: I know. It's okay. I just put Savannah down and ah, I made you cupcakes.

Kevin: Thanks...

Lucy: Ohh...

Kevin: I love you.

Lucy: I love you, too. Happy Valentine's Day.

Kevin: Happy Valentine's Day.

Lucy: You wouldn't want to clean up the kitchen for me, would you?

Kevin: I'd do anything for you.

Camden's House - Sam and David's Room

Sam: I don't feel so good.

David: Too many cupcakes.

Sam: Yeah, too many and too much spaghetti.

Happy: (whines)

Camden's House - Backyard

Annie: Hmmm... delicious...

Eric: Well, they're not from the French bakery.

Annie: That's okay. I love peanut butter and jelly.

Eric: With potato chips.

Annie: Uh-huh... nice touch.

Eric: Happy Valentine's Day.

Annie: Mmm... Happy Valentine's Day. You were wearing red socks the first night we went out. I mean, we didn't actually go out. I cooked a chicken and you came over and you were wearing red socks. Actually, I didn't know if I liked you until then. I mean, I thought you were cute, but I also knew you were a, a seminary student, and, well, that you were probably just maybe a little too straight for me, and then I saw those socks and it changed my mind.

Eric: Really?

Annie: Really...

Eric: And that's why...

Annie: That's why every year I buy you red socks for Valentine's Day.
